The Oduman N4 Gold is the gold-coloured version of the N4, a compact glass hookah from the Turkish brand Oduman. The smoke runs through the glass corpus itself, so the hookah needs no separate outer stem. At 28 centimeters tall and 17.5 centimeters wide this is a model for the table, not for beside the sofa.

How does the Gold differ from the regular N4?

Only in the finish. The glass is clear and handmade on both versions; on the Gold every stainless steel part has been given a gold titanium coating. That coating sits on the tray, the base, the smoke guide inside the glass and the hose mouthpiece. Technically it is the same hookah, so you choose purely on looks.

Mind the difference with the N4 Midi, which at 23 centimeters is considerably smaller. If you want a larger hookah this model is the wrong pick; 28 centimeters stays compact.

Two hose ports, one hose included

The N4 takes two hoses. The box holds one silicone hose of one and a half metres with a gold-coloured mouthpiece. The second port is closed with a cap and only comes into play when you smoke together. That is practical: you do not pay for a second hose you may never need, and the cap keeps the draw sealed while you smoke with one.

The diffuser and the draw

At the bottom of the smoke guide sits a diffuser. It splits the airflow into smaller bubbles, which does two things: the bubbling gets softer and the draw feels more even. On a hookah this size you notice that sooner than on a large one, because the water column is shorter.

LED lighting under the base

Built into the bottom is a POWER-LED running on two AAA batteries with sixteen modes: fixed colours and changing programmes. The light shines up through the glass body. The module sits apart from the smoke path, so rinsing and drying is no problem. Batteries are not included with every delivery; count on arranging those yourself.

What is and is not in the box?

Included are the glass body with smoke guide, the gold base, the tray, the silicone hose with mouthpiece, a hose holder, the diffuser, the LED module and the cap for the second port. A hookah bowl is not included; that goes for every Oduman hookah. So pick one from the hookah bowls, for instance a phunnel or a classic clay bowl.

Cleaning and maintenance

Because the smoke path runs through the glass, cleaning is simpler than on a hookah with a long metal stem. Rinse the body with lukewarm water after every session, let it dry upright and only store it once dry. Glycerin from the tobacco settles on the glass; leave it there and after a few sessions it shows as a hazy film. A soft bottle brush is enough, abrasive cleaner never.

Which coals and how much heat

This size simply needs less warmth than a tall hookah. Start with two coconut coals and only add a third if the vapor lags. Browse the hookah charcoal for natural coals that burn evenly. If you prefer a heat device over foil, you will find those among the Kaloud and metal chimneys; on a small bowl that saves shuffling.

For anyone short on space who still wants a hookah that stands out, and for anyone who values easy cleaning over maximum smoke output. If you are mainly after thick clouds and a long stem, a larger hookah suits you better. If you want something that stays on a table, cleans quickly and looks good, this is a strong choice.
