2. Fill to just below the rim, so that the foil or heat screen does not touch the tobacco.
3. Place aluminum foil tightly over the head or place a heat screen on it.
4. When using foil, make holes in a circle and in the middle.
5. Place 2 to 3 glowing shisha coals on the foil or screen.
6. Wait 2 to 3 minutes before you start drawing.

The clay heats up slowly and retains heat well. So start slowly and adjust the coal position if the smoke becomes too hot or too little. Preferably use natural coals for the best taste. They burn slower and release even heat without their own flavor.

Maintenance and cleaning

Unglazed clay requires slightly different care than ceramic or glass. Here are the key points:

• Rinse the head with warm water after use. No soap, as soap will soak into the clay and affect the taste.
• Let the head dry thoroughly before storing it. Clay that remains damp can mold.
• Carefully remove burnt tobacco residue with a soft brush or cloth.
• It is best to soak a new clay tobacco head in water first. This prevents it from being dry and brittle during the first use.
