1. Place a loose layer of shisha tobacco in the head. Fill it to just below the rim.
2. Stretch a sheet of aluminum foil tightly over the opening and poke small holes in a circular pattern around the center.
3. Using an HMD? Place it on the head and put glowing coals in it.
4. Start with low heat: begin with two coals and, if necessary, add a third if the smoke still has little volume after five minutes.
5. Swap or remove coals halfway through the session to maintain stable heat.

Use hookah natural coals for the best result. Quick-lighting coals give off more heat and can burn the tobacco faster. Good coals are just as important as a good tobacco head.

Maintenance and cleaning

After the session, it's good to clean the head. This way it lasts longer, and the previous flavor doesn't affect the next session. Wait until the head has cooled down, then rinse it under warm running water. Use a small brush or interdental brush to clear the holes if they are clogged. Do not use soap on the ceramic, as it will be absorbed into the material and can impart flavor. Let the head dry thoroughly before storing it.
