The KS Appo Lava Orange is a handmade stone hookah tobacco head from Germany. It comes as a complete set: the head itself, the Dschinni Vulcan Air hotscreen, and a stainless steel sieve. Everything you need for a good shisha session is included right away. The lava-orange glaze gives the head a striking appearance – no two are exactly alike.

Stone Material for Even Heat

What makes this stone hookah tobacco head different from a regular ceramic head is its dense material. There are no air chambers – the structure is completely solid. This allows heat to spread slowly and evenly throughout the entire head. The tobacco heats from all sides simultaneously, without hot spots that cause scorching.

The walls are thick enough to retain heat for a long time. You'll need to move or add coals less often, as the head regulates temperature better than thin-walled variants. This is especially noticeable during longer sessions: after an hour, it still smokes as smoothly as at the beginning.

The height of the head is 8.5 cm. The tobacco depot has a diameter of 5.5 cm and a depth of 2.2 cm. This is a medium-sized depot: enough for a full session, not so deep that the tobacco is difficult to fill.

Dschinni Vulcan Air Hotscreen - Heat Under Control

The Dschinni Vulcan Air hotscreen is made of stainless steel. It fits precisely over the KS Appo head, ensuring that the coals are at the correct distance above the tobacco. This height difference prevents direct burning and gives you more control over the temperature.

There are openings on the sides of the hotscreen that allow air to circulate. This makes the coals glow more evenly and release stable heat. With regular foil, the heat depends on how you poke the holes – with this hotscreen, you don't poke anything, and the distribution is always correct.

The dimensions: inner diameter 7.0 cm, outer diameter 7.3 cm. The hotscreen fits almost all hookah tobacco heads with a diameter up to 7 cm, including other heads in your collection.

Stainless Steel Sieve - Clean Smoke Column

The third component of the set is a stainless steel sieve with a diameter of 44 mm. You place it between the tobacco and the hotscreen. This prevents small tobacco particles and molasses from coming up into the smoke column. Your shisha hose and water vase stay cleaner, and the taste of the smoke is purer.

The sieve is completely heat-resistant and does not rust. After use, rinse it under warm water. After years of use, it will still look the same.

How to Fill the Head for the Best Session?

Distribute the tobacco loosely in the depot until just below the rim. Do not press down – air must be able to flow through. Too full or too tightly packed results in heavy, bitter smoke. Place the stainless steel sieve on top and then the Dschinni Vulcan Air hotscreen.

Start with two coconut coals. Place them at the edge of the hotscreen so they are not directly above the center. After three to four minutes, move them more towards the center if the heat is not yet sufficient. Good shisha coals made from coconut shell provide stable and long-lasting heat – which works well with how this stone head operates.

Tip: do not fill the depot to the absolute rim. Leave a few millimeters of space so that the sieve does not press directly on the tobacco. This allows air to flow more freely, and the smoke tastes smoother.

Maintenance and Cleaning

After each session, let the head cool down before cleaning it. Then rinse it with warm water and use a soft brush to remove tobacco residue. Do not use soap in the head itself – it will absorb into the stone and give an aftertaste in the next session.

The stainless steel sieve and the hotscreen can be cleaned with dish soap. Soaking them in warm water will loosen stubborn molasses residue. Dry all parts thoroughly before storage. The stone material absorbs moisture if left wet.
