Why does the glazed stone bowl work so well?

What exactly does the Hot Screen do?

The Hot Screen is a round metal plate that you place on top of the tobacco bowl. In the center of the plate is a chimney: an open tube through which heat escapes upwards. This draws the heat evenly over the tobacco or steam stones. The coals rest on the plate, not directly on the tobacco. This way, you never burn the contents of the bowl.

With regular foil, you regularly move coals back and forth to prevent a spot from getting too hot. With the Hot Screen, this is not necessary. The plate takes over that task. How to set up the set?

Fill the hookah tobacco bowl just below the rim. Lightly press the tobacco so it's not loose, but also not packed too tightly. Place the sieve in the bowl if you are using steam stones. Place the Hot Screen on top of the bowl. Heat your coals thoroughly on the shisha coal burner until they are glowing all around, without any black spots. Place two or three coals on the Hot Screen and start smoking.

After five minutes, check if the flavor is right. If there's too much bitterness in the smoke, remove a coal. If the flavor lacks strength, add an extra coal. You have much more control than with foil, because the Hot Screen maintains even heat.

Cleaning and maintenance

Rinse the glazed bowl with warm water. No soap needed: warm water and a soft brush are sufficient. The glaze layer doesn't allow much to stick. Clean the Hot Screen and sieve separately. Let the metal plate cool down after use before touching it. It doesn't rust quickly due to the type of metal, but drying it after rinsing extends its lifespan. Which coals are a good match for this set?

Always use hookah natural coals for the best flavor. Quick-light coals contain chemical igniters that affect the taste of your shisha.
