Glow them through before they go on the bowl

Do not light these cubes with a lighter or on the stove; use an electric or gas charcoal burner and let them glow through until they burn all around and show a light rim of ash. Only then do they go on your hookah bowl, preferably under a heat management device. Keep a pair of coal holders and tongs within reach to move them over safely.
