Jeff's 7 Elements Hookah Cleaner 340 ml - Shisha Cleaner in a Spray Bottle

The Hookah Cleaner by Jeff's 7 Elements is a cleaning liquid for hookahs that you use straight from the bottle. The bottle holds 340 millilitres and has a trigger that mists rather than pours. That saves product: you lay down a thin layer where the residue sits, instead of filling a whole base.

Liquid against powder

Cleaners for shisha come in two forms. Powders you dissolve in water first and leave standing in the base; that works well for the glass, but hardly reaches a stem or a hose. A spray does the opposite: you apply it to exactly the part that is dirty, even when it cannot be submerged. For a complete round many people use both.

Method according to the distributor

Shake the bottle before use. Take the shisha apart, mist it onto the parts and spray a few pulls into the base as well. Then let the product do its work for five to ten minutes, go through it with a brush and rinse everything with plenty of clean water. Let the parts air dry. These times come from the distributor; we have not measured them ourselves.

Where the residue sits

The brown film that forms after a few sessions is mostly settled glycerin from the molasses, mixed with ash and condensation. It fixes itself to the inside of the base, to the bottom centimeters of the stem and to the hose. That film is exactly what holds on to smells, and over time it narrows the passage, which makes the draw heavier.

Brushes alongside it

Chemistry alone does not shift stubborn residue; something has to go over it mechanically. A long, narrow brush for the stem and a round one for the base are the two you really need. Both sit with our cleaning supplies. Work from top to bottom and rinse the brush in between, otherwise you only move the dirt around.

What not to use it on

Leather and moisture do not mix, cleaner or not; such a hose you only wipe down on the outside with a dry cloth. Washable silicone hoses can go through water. If you have parts with a coloured coating or an etched decoration, test on an inconspicuous spot first. Our washable hoses are the easiest in this respect.

How often is often enough?

That depends on how much you smoke. At a few sessions a week it is enough to rinse the base every time and run a round with cleaner weekly. If the hookah runs daily, count on twice a week. Leave it standing with water in it after use and things go wrong sooner: standing water with residue in it turns musty within a day, and that smell works its way into the glass.

What you may expect from a cleaner

A cleaner dissolves residue and takes along the smell trapped in it. What it does not do is polish out scratches, bring back a coating that has gone dull, or prevent limescale rings if you have hard water. For limescale a splash of vinegar in the rinsing water works better, provided your parts tolerate it. So expect a gain in flavour and in draw, not in looks.

Storing it after the round

Only put the parts back together once they are dry. Moisture left behind in the stem or under a grommet turns musty within days, and a grommet that stays wet goes slack sooner. Stand the base upside down on a cloth and hang the hose out straight, so the last of the water runs out instead of pooling at the bottom.
